My topic:  CONSTRUCTION SAFETY PERFORMANCE IN MAURITIUS

ABSTRACT:

The construction industry is a dynamic and innovative industry that is faced with safety challenges on a project by project and day to day basis.  A greater part of accidents would not have happened if there were convenient and satisfactory safety measures.  The Mauritius Central Statistics Office reported that in 2010, 69% of the fatal accidents occurred within the construction industry.  Hence, the objectives of this study are to firstly, assess the factors influencing safety performance and secondly, identify the interventions to improve safety performance in the Mauritian Construction Industry.  A questionnaire survey was conducted in Mauritius targeting the Grade A contractors registered with The Ministry of Public Infrastructure, National Development Unit, Land Transport and Shipping.  The results suggested that the three main factors affecting safety performance are: lack of supervision, lack of safety training and level of technical skills.  Additionally, the three main interventions to improve safety performance are Site Environment, Top Management Commitment and Presence of Safety Representative.

CONSTRUCTION SAFETY MANAGEMENT

Construction Safety Management is a technique for monitoring safety arrangements, systems and action on development areas (Wilson and Koehn, 2000).  It is an elemental procedure involving little or substantial conformities made to site operatives to accomplish aims without experiencing unforeseen “shocks” to normal business (Cheng et al, 2004).  Moreover, safety ought to be implemented as an administrative idea into each level of an organisation and all aspects of a cross-hierarchical project.

While regarding construction safety management, safety culture and safety climate are prone to be two imperative perspectives (Flin et al, 2000).  Safety culture is prior to an extensive body of exploration into authoritative society.  On the other hand, climate culture exemplifies values, convictions and basic presumptions.  It is an elucidating measure that records the workforce's opinion of the hierarchical environment (Gonzalez-Roma et al, 1999).

SITE ENVIRONMENT

Site environment has been identified as the main intervention in improving safety performance.  Below are some pictorial illustrations of site environment safety.
